Fungi: Absence of chlorophyll is one of the characteristics

General characteristics presented by the fungi:

- Develop mainly in places with high presence of organic material and humidity. The lack of light also facilitates fungal development.

- Can be multicellular (composed of more than one cell) or unicellular (composed of only one cell). Most multicellular fungi have a stalk called mycelium. This mycelium is composed of filaments (hyphae).

- Fungi do not have chlorophyll.

- The fungal nutrition is heterotrophic, ie the nutrients they need to live are obtained through organic matter. However, fungi do not ingest organic matter, but obtain their nutrients through an absorption process. Digestion takes place outside the body, meaning they release enzymes that digest organic matter and only after this process are nutrients absorbed.

- May reproduce sexually or asexually.

- Reproduction through spores is also very common in various fungal species.

- They have the ability to store spare material which, like many animals, is glycogen.
