Ecology: Three major branches of study
Introduction
The study of ecology can be divided into several branches (areas). The three main branches of this science are: Autoecology, Synecology and Demoecology. The division of ecology into these three major branches of study was made by botanist Carl Schroter in the early twentieth century.
THE BOUNDARIES OF ECOLOGY AND ITS MAIN FEATURES
Self ecology
It studies the species from their relations with the environment. That is, how each species (animal or plant) reacts separately to certain environmental factors (climate, vegetation, relief, etc.). It is the classic scientific branch and currently followed by few scientists.
Synecology
Also known as Community Ecology, it is focused on the study of communities of living beings. Synecology focuses on the distribution of populations, their ecological relationships, demographics, displacement and quantities. Synecology also examines food chain structures, ecological sequences and interrelations between predators and prey.
Demoecology
Also known as Population Dynamics or Population Ecology, it studies each population separately.
