Strawberry: Examples of Pseudo Fruit
What they are (definition)
Pseudofruits, also known as false fruits, are succulent (juice-rich) plant structures that are not fruit because they do not originate from the plant's ovary. They develop from a plant tissue next to a flower.
Main characteristics of pseudo-fruits:
- They have a physical aspect similar to true fruits (because of this it is common for people to call these structures fruit).
- They are juicy (rich in juice).
- Have a large amount of nutrients in the form of reserves.
Types of pseudo-products and examples
Simple pseudo-products
They are those that originate from the development of the receptacle or peduncle of a single flower.
Examples: pear, apple, quince and cashew (juicy part).
Compound Pseudofruits
Also known as aggregate pseudofruits, are those that originate from the receptacle of a flower with multiple ovaries.
Examples: Strawberry and Raspberry
Multiple pseudo-fruits (fruitlessness)
They are those originating from the development of ovaries of various flowers of an inflorescence (part of the plant where the flowers are), which grow together in a single structure.
Examples: fig, blackberry and pineapple.
