What is it, functions and characteristics

The endocrine system performs its functions through hormones. Hormones are substances that can be produced by cell, tissue or organ.

Hormones are always carried by the bloodstream, they act remotely, inhibiting or stimulating cells, tissues or organs.

When there is any dysfunction in the blood circulation, hormonal dysfunction automatically occurs, because due to poor circulation, hormones, as well as other nutrients, find it difficult to reach their destination.

Through blood circulation, hormones are able to circulate throughout the body, however, their effect will occur only on organs that have a receptor for it. When there is no such receptor, the hormone has no effect.

In cells, hormones can act directly on the plasma membrane without having to cross it, however, there are some types that cross it, also acting within it.


In general, we should know that the endocrine system is composed of six major glands, and these are controlled by the action of the nervous system and also by the action of one on the other.
